Using Squidoo to Generate Traffic (and Residual Income!)
I discovered a way to generate more traffic and to get clients for my editorial and writing services through my Squidoo websites (www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/editordave)that I started in May 2007. Since then, I've created more than 100 Squidoo websites (called "Lenses" because they focus on your unique view of the universe). I'm discovering that the income stream is not "flash-in-the-pan" or "get-rich-quick"... it's very slow and steady, and it DOES take some work (namely research, picture-taking and scanning, and keyboarding). But, because the Squidoo lenses are free and relatively easy to throw together and then go back and later improve on once you've figured out what you are doing, it's a great way for novices to the Internet to become familiar with how a webpage should work. I'm using my Squidoo lenses as "showcases" for my writing and research ability. They not only show what I can dig up on esoteric things (such as Fruitbats, Carabao, and Stonefish), but they also show my writing ability. (And, the bonus is... they generate a small amount of "residual" income for me each month!) One of my first jobs was that of a teacher ... and I *loved* teaching... sharing the wonders of the world (I was an English teacher for a while, and then later became a biology and chemistry teacher). However, the pay wasn't something that I could use to support my wife and our kids... so I ventured into technical editing and writing for large corporations. This worked well until the dot-com meltdown in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Then, after a series of layoffs and "downsizings", I decided to become a freelancer. To help folks with their writing by providing my editorial services. The Internet has made this possible... But the hard part is letting the world know that I'm here ready to edit for them. And Squidoos, like Qassia, are some of the ways to do that. It's a cool way to get your word out there. Once you get a following (I have *fans*!), it's even more fun when you get dialogs going with them and they share their sites with you!
