Squeeze Energy Value From Your Vehicle
With the prices of oil flashing past $100 a barrel, folks are starting to look elsewhere for ways to squeeze more energy out of alternate sources (and just practicing energy-conservation is a good start!). Simple, yet effective, ways to reduce your total energy load for your vehicles include: --Keeping your tires properly inflated on your vehicle (it maximizes your milage efficiency to squeeze that last attainable distance from your fuel tank!). --Driving at the speed limit and not jack-rabbit starting and slam-on-brakes stopping (maximizes vehicle efficiency also). --Eliminating unnecessary weight from your car's trunk and passenger areas (no, you still should keep the spare tire and the jack and tools *grin*-- just get rid of all the junk, books, extra boxes of stuff and so on). --Drive, if possible, with the windows closed (this reduces air drag on the vehicle--thus maximizing the work your engine is doing). Of course, if your vehicle doesn't have an air-conditioner or heater, this might not be an attainable option. --When getting on an express-way or freeway, get up to speed quickly then maintain it. Taking a long time to get up to speed also uses unnecessary fuel (because you will be doing more shifting--whether you are driving a manual transmission or automatic transmission). --Keep the vehicle clean. Extra dirt weighs more. More stuff your engine has to haul around (yeah, I know it seems "negligible"--but all that adds up. --Besides, a clean car just looks better, right?) --Schedule your trips such that you can make them during non-rush-hour periods of traffic. Stop-and-go traffic eats up your fuel efficiency and also wears out your brakes and engine quicker. --If you have multiple chores around town that must be driven to, plan the route so that you aren't criss-crossing town back and forth to get them all done. Do the chores in a linear or circular fashion such that you drop off stuff near your home, then go on to the next place to do business, then on to the next place, then on the way home pick up the stuff you dropped off at the beginning of the trip. Over time, this methodology really saves fuel and wear-and-tear on your vehicle (and your nerves, as well!) --Also, if some of your destinations are within a block or two from your home, why not just leave the car behind and walk? Or take your bicycle? Or, public transportation? This can save more than you think--and also keep you healthier (the walking and bicycling, in particular). I hope this helps with some of your vehicle energy conservation efforts!
